This page provides details for synchronizing a local URPMI repository of skypeforlinux using the <b>sync_skype_urpmi</b> [[#ref-1 | [1] ]] script.

This page is a companion to [[Skype_with_video|Skype with video]].

The purpose of this page solely to assist Mageia users who may wish to install Skype.
Skype is Microsoft software. It is not open source. It is <b>not</b> supported on Mageia Linux by Microsoft or anyone else.

There are alternative Voice Over IP (VOIP) software packages but is beyond the scope of this wiki page to discuss or make recommendations.


== Warning: change from RPM to Canonical snap ==

As of Saturday 28th November 2023, Microsoft has changed the way they distribute <b>skypeforlinux</b>.<br>
It is no longer available as an RPM. The new packaging method is to use Canonical's <b>snap</b> format.

The most recent updated version that sync_skype_urpmi would have installed is: <b>skypeforlinux-8.108.0.205-1</b> from November 2023.<br>
As of 8th February 2024, the latest version of skypeforlinux (available using snap) is: <b>8.110.0.218</b>.

This new distribution method has been noted in a post on reddit:<br>

There is discussion of the possibility of porting Canonical's snap in the Mageia forums but it is probably not going to happen.<br>

Run the <i>sync_skype_urpmi</i> script as a non-root user who is configured to be enabled to use <i>sudo</i>.<br>
If needed then <i>sync_skype_urpmi</i> will invoke <i>sudo</i> to complete any task needing root access.<br>
So, the script may pause and <i>sudo</i> may prompt for password before continuing.
