== modesetting display driver is upstream default==Upstream the modesetting display driver provided by x11-server-common is the default. It's newer technology than at least the GPU-specific drivers x11-driver-video-intel, x11-driver-video-nouveau and x11-driver-video-ati (aka radeon), so default for good reason. IMO it would be better in most cases to not install metapackage x11-driver-video. The only good reason I can think of to include all GPU-specific display drivers is that the modesetting does not support some ancient GPUs, 15 years old or older, e.g. Gen3 and older Intel (915, 945, [Q,G]3x, early Atom; [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Intel_graphics_processing_units?useskin=vector#Gen3] Wikipedia). For most Intel GPUs, modesetting is clearly preferable to x11-driver-video-intel, and also for most NVidia GPUs not supported by the newer still nvidia-current-open-kernel-* and x11-driver-video-nvidia-*, to x11-driver-video-nouveau. Graphics: New hardware support is provided by the backport kernel, Intel example
← Older revision Revision as of 10:36, 29 January 2026 Line 147: Line 147: {{Bug|32182}} - '''Incomplete OpenGL support with old GPUs.''' Example: '''Blender''' show no text in menus and dialogues - Possibly more software are affected and with different symptoms. Rare. When you use an old GPU that have no modern driver, OpenGL may not provide enough support for some applications needs. One symptom may be that you see "[INVALID_OPCODE]" in journal. For changing driver and see logs etc see [[Setup_the_graphical_server|here]]. This is a complex issue of application need, the driver chain, and actual GPU. For example per the bug it mostly works with nouveau+modesetting, but fail on another Nvidia GPU. '''FIXED partly''' by updates. However nothing can cover all cases on old hardware... '''Workarounds:''' 1.) try another driver. 2.) Try without modesetting (if you use that), or change to modesetting. 3.) Disable hardware acceleration: {{prog|Mageia Control Center}} Section {{menu|Hardware > Set up the graphical server}} item {{menu|Options}}) and checkmark "Disable Hardware Acceleration" (available only for intel, amdgpu, nvidia proprietary, nouveau and modesetting). {{Bug|32182}} - '''Incomplete OpenGL support with old GPUs.'''
